The democratization problem

Everyone has access to the same models. The same APIs. The same context windows and tool-calling capabilities. A teenager in Manila and a partner at McKinsey can both open Claude and type the same prompt.

So why does the output look so different?


Prompting is directing, not typing

Most people treat prompting like filling out a form. They type what they want, hit enter, and accept whatever comes back. This is like walking into a recording studio and reading the lyrics off your phone.

Good prompting is directing. You’re setting a scene. Establishing tone. Leaving room for the unexpected while holding the vision tight enough that the result feels intentional.

The best prompt I ever wrote was three sentences long. The worst was four paragraphs. Length is not the variable.


The iteration is the work

Nobody lands it on the first try. The real skill is the loop:

Start broad. Let the model surprise you. Half the time, the best version of your idea is one you didn’t have when you sat down.

React honestly. “This is close but the second paragraph feels corporate” is worth more than a detailed rewrite. Say what’s wrong, not what to write.

Refine with specificity. Once you know the shape, get precise. “Make the metaphor about doors, not windows” changes everything.

Know when to stop. This is taste. The ability to recognize when one more iteration would polish away the thing that makes it interesting.


Taste can’t be prompted

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the best AI work will come from people who were already good at something. Not good at prompting — good at seeing. Good at knowing when a sentence lands and when it slides. Good at recognizing quality even when they can’t articulate why.

Taste is the filter between capability and craft. You can teach someone the tools in an afternoon. You can’t teach them to care about the difference between “good enough” and “right.”


The new creative stack

The people doing the most interesting work right now share three traits:

They have domain knowledge — real experience in the thing they’re building, not just opinions about it.

They have iteration tolerance — the willingness to throw away the first version and the third version and the seventh version because none of them were the one.

They have taste — the ability to recognize the moment when the work crosses from competent to alive.

The tools are commoditized. The taste never will be.


The craft continues

We’re at the beginning of something. The tools are crude, the norms are unwritten, and the best practices haven’t been discovered yet. That’s exactly what makes it worth paying attention.

The people who figure out the craft — not the prompts, the craft — will define what this era produces. Everyone else will produce slop that sounds the same as everyone else’s slop.

Choose which side of that line you want to be on.
