"articleBody": "Cleaner backhands, one useful contact at a time\n\nMake room for the ball, choose a stroke that fits the situation, and practice a reset you can measure.\n\nA cleaner backhand gives you a ball you can repeat and a position from which you can play again. Start with a modest goal: send a comfortable feed toward a large target, then recover before the next feed arrives. A spectacular winner tells you less than ten contacts you can describe. Were you crowded? Reaching? Balanced? Did the paddle face change just before contact?\n\nPrepare early, keep the job small\n\nTurn enough to bring the paddle to the backhand side, then use adjustment steps to create space. Picture a contact window in front of your body rather than beside your hip. If the ball crowds you, make room with your feet instead of inventing a last-second wrist flick. If it pulls you away, acknowledge the reach before choosing an ambitious target.\n\nFor a soft backhand drop, PrimeTime Pickleball's lesson emphasizes balance, a manageable preparation, and a smooth lifting path. Try that as a cue: prepare small, meet the ball in front, and keep the face steady through contact. A baseline drop needs a different amount of motion from a kitchen dink. Compact preparation does not mean every backhand has an identical swing.\n\nWatch what the ball does. Repeated high misses can prompt you to examine face angle and lift; repeated net misses can prompt you to examine clearance and contact. Change one variable for the next ten feeds. Those observations suggest a place to investigate; they do not diagnose the cause by themselves.\n\nOne hand or two: choose a useful option\n\nThe 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook permits one or both hands on the paddle. Neither option comes with a rating requirement.\n\nA second hand is worth exploring if it helps you guide the paddle consistently. Jordan Briones's two-handed lesson connects balance and spacing with a controlled upward path for a topspin dink or drop. That is a particular shot to practice, rather than a reason to replace every one-handed backhand. His lesson also keeps a one-handed option for some deep, difficult balls.\n\nCompare options with the same comfortable feed. Try ten one-handed contacts, then ten two-handed contacts if you want to explore that stroke. Record target hits and whether you recovered on time. Keep the result specific: “Two hands helped on these slow feeds” is useful. “Two hands fixed my backhand” skips the next test: movement, depth, or pace.\n\nUnder pressure, reduce the demand\n\nA reset is a softer reply intended to make the opponent's next ball less attackable. "articleBody": "Smarter mixed doubles starts with a shared next-ball plan\n\nAgree on the seam, read the ball, and choose aggression that leaves both partners ready for the reply.\n\nMixed doubles works better when both players know what the partnership is trying to do. A useful plan reflects each player's strokes, movement, current position, and preferences. It gives both people a voice and can change when the rally changes. No player inherits a shot or a side because of gender. Before discussing winners, make the ordinary balls easier to share.\n\nMake a small agreement before playing\n\nUse the first half-minute to agree on “mine,” “yours,” and what “switch” means to you. Identify handedness, a starting plan for uncertain middle balls, and how you will handle a lob. Calls should arrive early enough to help. An agreement is a starting point; a partner with the cleanest available contact may still need to take a different ball.\n\nAsk before giving technical advice between points. Tony Roig's partnership lesson encourages adjusting your own choices to the partner you actually have. Try a question that leaves room for an answer: “Would an earlier call help?” is more actionable than a verdict about somebody's backhand. Agree on one change together, then try it for a few rallies.\n\nShare the middle by reading the ball\n\n“Forehand takes everything in the middle” is too blunt. Handedness, ball direction, spacing, and who is already in position matter. In Roig's middle-coverage lesson, a backhand can be the natural contact for the ball's path. Reaching across your partner for a forehand can also leave a hole behind you.\n\nUse right and left as court positions while facing the net, not permanent identities. Before a seam ball arrives, ask: who can meet it with less reaching, and what court will the other person cover afterward? A clear early call resolves the overlap. If both hesitate, replay the situation in practice instead of appointing a permanent owner for every middle ball.\n\nCoordinate coverage without assuming you must stand at matching depths. Roig's positioning lesson describes reacting to the ball and the developing play. You may shift laterally toward a wide ball while maintaining useful spacing. One partner may be closer to the kitchen after a good drop while the hitter is still advancing. Read the opponent's contact before taking the next step; the same formation will not fit every reply.\n\nAttack an opportunity; reset a problem\n\nLook for a combination: balance, a contact you can control, an available target, and a reasonable next position. A high ball alone does not guarantee a good attack. A low ball while reaching is a good reason to simplify. PrimeTime's strategy lesson separates attacking an advantage, creating pressure, and neutralizing trouble.\n\nIf you are displaced, consider a soft reply toward a generous middle target and recover. Briones's dink-selection lesson offers the middle as one recovery option when pulled wide. A reset can also use the incoming pace with little swing, as shown in PrimeTime's blocking lesson. These are options to rehearse, not promises that every ball can be neutralized.\n\nJudge the choice separately from the outcome. An opponent can miss after your risky swing; your sensible reset can miss the net. Record both the intention and what happened. That keeps a lucky point from becoming the whole tactical plan.\n\nKeep the opening legal\n\nThe serve and its return must each bounce before being returned. A preferred-side arrangement, including stacking, does not change the correct server or receiver. After those requirements, partners may position themselves on their own end subject to the other rules. Kitchen restrictions still apply to every volley. Check the current USA Pickleball rulebook, sections 5.B, 10.A, and 11.A.\n\nTwelve minutes for a shared plan\n\nUse four players, with one pair feeding and one pair receiving. Change roles halfway through each four-minute round. Keep the feed pace manageable and use short blocks of ten whenever time permits.\n\nFour minutes: seam calls. Feed bounced balls through a broad middle corridor. The receiving pair calls early, chooses one hitter, and prepares for another feed. Count balls with one clear hitter, untouched balls, and late crossings. Swap left and right to test the agreement from both positions.\n\nFour minutes: pressure choices. Alternate comfortable higher feeds with lower or wider feeds. The receiver declares “attack” or “reset”; the partner covers the likely reply. The feeder lets reset attempts bounce. Record landing spots and whether the pair was ready again. Discuss uncertain choices after the block.\n\nFour minutes: play the next ball. Begin normal rallies with a legal serve and return. After each rally, each partner names one observable moment: a useful call, an overlap, a controlled reply, or a position that left space open. Change only one agreement for the next rally.\n\nEnd with a shared sentence: “On uncertain middle balls, we will call earlier and leave the caller space.” Retest at a similar pace next practice. Counts and specific observations give both partners something to improve together, without turning a drill into a rating claim.",
